…Okay, so I’m not as desperate as that. I finished reading the scanlation lately (read: aeons after everyone else) and would like to exchange thoughts with fellow DN readers. To begin with, a couple of general questions about the series.
1. What do you think of Misa’s portrayal as a giddy, clingy uber-cute girl? Do you think that’s what she genuinely is, or is she smarter than she appears to be?
2. How are Light and Lawliet different in their attitude toward (what they believe to be) justice?
(I say Lawliet instead of L because, as the Salon.com article points out, “Kira” and “L” are identities rather than characters)
3. In your opinion, does Light underestimate Near and Mello? What might cause his stubborn conviction that each of them is less capable than Lawliet?
4. Do you think what Matsuda does to Light at the Yellow Box warehouse is out of character or in character? Do you think any of the other police officers would be able to do pull the same act?

1. I think she really is a giddy, clingy, uber-cute girl, but that giddy, clingy, uber-cute girls can be smarter than anyone gives them credit for.
2. (This is based more on the DN anime than the manga, but) I think Lawliet has a much less rigid conception of justice, stemming from his much broader education, background, and experience. Light is smart, but he’s 100% positive that HIS justice is the only real justice. Lawliet is more flexible, and puts more stock in complex, ambiguous, relative forms of justice like the UN and international law.
3. Each of them IS less capable than L. This is pretty much a given, since the two of them together add up to L. *g* But even together, they fall short. Mello is creative, but impulsive, and Near is a great analyst, but not imaginative. I think Light’s insistence that they aren’t as good as L is truth, but I also think it’s because in his mind, NO ONE can measure up to L — the mysterious detective who was so smart, and yet, such a freak. XD
I haven’t read the last volume so I can’t comment on 4.
